A Canadian Invented Basketball Because His Boss Asked Him to Invent a Sport.
James Naismith, December 1891.
James Naismith was a Canadian gym teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts. His boss said the students were bored in December and needed an indoor sport. Naismith had two weeks.
He nailed two peach baskets to the wall, used a soccer ball, and wrote thirteen rules on a piece of paper. The first basketball game ended 1-0.
The NBA generates 10.5 billion dollars in revenue annually. Naismith is buried in Lawrence, Kansas, with a bronze peach basket on his tombstone.
